Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga emerges President of the Nigerian Red Cross

After at least 7 hours of a meticulous screening procedure and then a round of voting, Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga has emerged the President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Nigeria’s largest Humanitarian Organization. Prince Adeaga was elected alongside other National Officers and Advisers such as his deputy, Barrister Zubair Umar who was elected National Vice President. Prince Adeaga who promised to do his best to uplift the Nigerian Red Cross shortly took his oath of office alongside other National Officers and Advisers of the Nigeria Red Cross who had just been elected too. All the National Officers will serve an initial term of 4 years after which they may seek reelection.

As floods continue to ravage at least 29 States in Nigeria, The Nigerian Red Cross Society has launched a N10.8b Emergency Appeal to enable it deal with the effects of floods in the country. Addressing Journalists, Abubakar Kende, the Secretary General of the Nigerian Red Cross Society  said that “According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), an unusually heavy rainfall in 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states has resulted in massive flooding which has displaced more than 1.4 million people and affected over 2.5 million people.  Bayelsa State in Nigeria’s South South region was reportedly the worst affected, with its capital Yenagoa literally cut off and about 700,000 people displaced or affected as at 18 October.”  Kende gave a grave situation report. “As things stand now, the flooding has resulted in over 600 fatalities and more than 2,400 people, injured across the country. Beyond its direct, disastrous effects, the floods have triggered a cholera outbreak in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.” He then spoke of the appeal and the use, the funds would be put to.   “ Most importantly, barely 10 days ago, the NRCS launched an Emergency Appeal in order to raise 13 million Swiss Francs which will be used to support up to 500,000 people and focus on the provision of  Health, Care, Water, Sanitation, Hygiene Promotion, search, rescue. Rapid NEEDS assessments, deploy Emergency First Aid Teams and many more.”

Saving Lives and Livelihoods Campaign storms Port Harcourt, Nigeria

As part of the Saving Lives and Livelihoods program of the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention, volunteers of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, made an advocacy visit to the Chairmen of the Mile 3 Market Union in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The SLL program is an initiative that seeks to ensure that at least 70 % of Nigeria’s population is vaccinated against COVID 19 before the year 2022 runs out.

The SLL program is supported by the Mastercard Foundation and several other implementing partners including the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
