  • As floods continue to ravage at least 29 States in Nigeria, The Nigerian Red Cross Society has launched a N10.8b Emergency Appeal to enable it deal with the effects of floods in the country. Addressing Journalists, Abubakar Kende, the Secretary General of the Nigerian Red Cross Society said that “According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), an unusually heavy rainfall in 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states has resulted in massive flooding which has displaced more than 1.4 million people and affected over 2.5 million people. Bayelsa State in Nigeria’s South South region was reportedly the worst affected, with its capital Yenagoa literally cut off and about 700,000 people displaced or affected as at 18 October.” Kende gave a grave situation report. “As things stand now, the flooding has resulted in over 600 fatalities and more than 2,400 people, injured across the country. Beyond its direct, disastrous effects, the floods have triggered a cholera outbreak in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.” He then spoke of the appeal and the use, the funds would be put to. “ Most importantly, barely 10 days ago, the NRCS launched an Emergency Appeal in order to raise 13 million Swiss Francs which will be used to support up to 500,000 people and focus on the provision of Health, Care, Water, Sanitation, Hygiene Promotion, search, rescue. Rapid NEEDS assessments, deploy Emergency First Aid Teams and many more.”

    As floods continue to ravage at least 29 States in Nigeria, The Nigerian Red Cross Society has launched a N10.6b Flood Emergency Appeal in Abuja, Nigeria, in order to provide aid for affected persons.
